  4. Country Description:  Swaziland is a small developing nation in Southern 
  5. Africa.  Facilities for tourism are available.
  6.  
  7. Entry Requirements:  A passport is required.  Visas are not required of 
  8. tourists planning to stay less than 60 days.  Temporary residence permits 
  9. are issued in Mbabane.  For longer stays, visitors must report to 
  10. immigration authorities or to a police station within 48 hours of arrival, 
  11. if they are not lodged in a hotel.  Yellow fever and cholera immunizations 
  12. are required if the visitor is arriving from an infected area.  Anti-
  13. malarial treatment is recommended.  Further information may be obtained from

  17. Medical Facilities:  Medical facilities are limited.  Doctors and hospitals 
  18. often expect immediate cash payment for health services.  Not all U.S. 
  19. medical insurance is valid outside the United States.  Supplemental medical 
  20. insurance with specific overseas coverage has proved to be useful.

  22. Control's international travelers hotline, telephone (404) 332-4559.

  24. Information on Crime:  Petty street crime, primarily theft of money and 
  25. personal property, occurs with some frequency.  The loss or theft abroad of 
  26. a U.S. passport should be reported immediately to local police and to the 
  27. nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.  The pamphlets "A Safe Trip Abroad" and 
  28. "Tips for Travelers to Sub-Saharan Africa" provide useful information on 
  29. protecting personal security while traveling abroad and on travel in the 
  30. region in general.  Both are available from the Superintendent of Documents, 
  31. U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C. 20402.

  33. Drug Penalties:  U.S. citizens are subject to the laws of the country in 
  34. which they are traveling.  Penalties for possession, use or trafficking in 
  35. illegal drugs are strict, and convicted offenders can expect jail sentences 
  36. and fines.

  38. Registration: U.S. citizens who register at the U.S. Embassy in Mbabane may 
  39. obtain updated information on travel and security in Swaziland.
